The "D-Handle" Mugs

The D-Handle mugs are the staple of a Fire-King mug collector.  Generally these are more desirable than stacking mugs, having a classic stylish and timeless look not quite matched by other glass makers.  They will all have a dimple in the top of the handle.  There is some variation in the heat rings, the curvature of the sides, the shape of the base, wall thickness, and up to 1/8" variation in height.

A Vitrock mug.  Not marked but these are the earliest true Fire-King mugs.  Notice the “philbe” shape—straight sides and very pronounced base lip.  The dimple on top of handle lasted to the end.  Bead heat ring near outer edge. Late 1930s - 1941 The Philbe shape in sapphire blue.  Straight sides, dimple handle, edge to base.  These are usually marked on bottom.  The heat ring is shaped flat, and is at the outer edge of the base.  Mid-late 1940s Philbe Wannabe—the same as philbe but not embossed with design and has a bead NEAR the edge, not a flat heat ring AT the edge like the true Philbe.  Very few were marked on bottom.  These are only in ivory, not white. Early 1940s Transition shaving mug in ivory—the sharp base isn’t so sharp any more but is not really a flowing curve either.  Probably done to help prevent the base from chipping.  No heat ring on the bottom.  Sides now curved. Notice the inward taper nearing the top. These mugs can vary in height and thickness - thicker is older. 1940s - 1950s
Jadeite Philbe, one all collecors treasure.  Flat heat ring at the outer edge, usually not marked. Mid-late 1940s Standard D handle mug.  Curved sides, still has the handle dimple, thin bead heat ring is about 3/16” or 5mm from the outer edge. Late 1950s to late 1970s A Federal mug on the right.  There is no dimple in the handle, which is placed higher on the mug than on a Fire-King; the curvature of the sides is different, and the diameter at the top is about 1/8” wider than a Fire-King mug which is shown on the left.  Even without looking at the bottom, which will show an F inside a shield, a trained collector will see without picking it up that this is not a Fire-King mug.
